“Metabolic Syndrome” is a relatively new medical term. It is not a specific “disease” and may not immediately arouse any discomfort, but it signals a health risk by reflecting the physical health status of an individual. Metabolic syndrome not only affects middle-aged and elderly persons, many research studies conducted in Hong Kong have also revealed that there is an increasing tendency towards young generation to suffer from metabolic syndrome in recent years. And according to the figures shown by International Diabetes Federation, presently there are about a quarter of adult population worldwide suffering from metabolic syndrome. In Hong Kong, there are 17 persons for every 100 persons suffering from metabolic syndrome. An individual with metabolic syndrome is more susceptible to coronary heart diseases, stroke, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases than an ordinary person. According to a consolidated figure released by the United States, the risk of an individual with metabolic syndrome is 2 to 6 times greater than an ordinary person attacked by coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In a series case, it will hasten an individual’s death.
